2010 Jan 14: District Water Arsenic Levels Extremely Low
An article in the Santa Fe New Mexican on January 14, reported that a survey of private, domestic water wells in the Santa Fe area found that 15% of the wells surveyed in Eldorado had elevated arsenic levels. The survey did not include any District wells.
District wells are tested for arsenic, and the detectable levels range from zero to 0.003 µg/L (micrograms per Liter). The federal standard for allowable levels of arsenic in drinking water is 10 µg/L. A µg/L (equivalent to one part per billion) is analogous to one second in 32 years or one inch in 16,000 miles (nearly 2/3 the distance around the world at the equator). Thus, 0.003 µg/L is analogous to one second in over 10,000 years.
The District tests its water for many different constituents, in accordance with federal monitoring and testing requirements. The results are reported annually in our Water Quality Report. The 2009 report (as well as prior year reports) are posted on our website; click here to view these reports.
